India’s insurance sector is taking a digital leap. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) chairman Ajay Seth on Wednesday launched the official website of the Bima Sugam India Federation (BSIF), marking the first visible step in creating India’s digital public infrastructure for insurance.

Breakdown
The Vision:
Bima Sugam is aligned with the national goal of “Insurance for All by 2047” and the Prime Minister’s mission of Viksit Bharat 2047. It seeks to simplify access, improve transparency, and deepen penetration of insurance across India.
The Platform:
Designed as a digital public infrastructure (DPI), Bima Sugam will allow seamless interactions between insurers, intermediaries, and policyholders, reducing friction and improving efficiency in the insurance value chain.
The Impact:
According to Seth, the initiative will empower policyholders, ensure fairness, and bring transparency to the system, while providing insurers with a scalable digital foundation to reach underserved markets.
Why This Matters
Insurance penetration in India remains low compared to global peers. By creating a DPI for insurance, India can cut distribution costs, improve trust, and expand coverage to millions who remain uninsured or underinsured. This is especially critical for financial resilience in a fast-growing economy.
The Bigger Picture
Just as UPI transformed payments, Bima Sugam could transform insurance. If executed well, it will not only democratise access but also set a benchmark for digital public goods in financial services. It marks a shift from fragmented systems to a unified infrastructure that supports India’s long-term vision of inclusive growth.
